Without the financial support of people who believe in our mission, our medical campus and
services would not be what they are.
The St. Mary’s Hospital of Superior Foundation was established to support Superior’s
hometown hospital through research and education efforts against cancer, heart disease,
stroke and childhood diseases. It also provides funds for capital needs.
Recent Foundation gifts have improved cardiac rehabilitation facilities; funded
redesign of the general rehabilitation facilities; helped expand and remodel the
hospital’s chapel; and supported an in-house Advanced Cardiac Life Support education
program.
Digital mammography aids administrator's breast cancer diagnosis
As the administrator of St. Mary's Hospital of Superior/Duluth Clinic-Superior, Mary Shaw understands the importance of the annual mammogram. Just this spring, she started to help
raise funds for new digital mammography equipment at the hospital -- not knowing how important this technology was
about to become in her own life.
In late May, Mary had her regular mammogram screening in Superior. A suspicious area led to another appointment to get
a clearer picture through dense tissue -- this time with a digital mammogram at the SMDC Breast Health Center in Duluth. Her doctor could see a cluster of cells on the left side near her chest wall; a needle biopsy showed it was cancer.

"It is critical for women, even women who don't have a strong history of breast cancer in their family," she says. "The digital equipment makes a difference for women with dense breast tissue in providing clarity and assisting with a diagnosis."
The hospital foundation wants to raise $900,000 for a digital mammography machine. Read more about how you can help.
